One of the first places we visited in Egypt was Saqqara-the place of the oldest pyramids and tombs, dating back to the Old Kingdom, circa 2600-2100 B.C. I could not understand why the group ahead of us was in tears as they emerged from the inside of the vessel. But when it was our group’s turn to descend into what was unknown to us we all were immediately enthralled by the scenes depicted on the walls and ceilings. The well-preserved, intricate designs inside of the tombs were breath-taking. Clearly, the Ancient Egyptians could see beyond the naked eye. Their astrological, physiological, and ecological insight was far beyond what one in the modern world would expect. And if that were not enough, our guide turned the floodlights off to shine a light on a particular area of the wall. Embedded within the hieroglyphics and scene of Gods and Goddesses was a life-size inlay of a warrior. That is the moment I became overwhelmed with the sheer magnitude and depth of a technologically advanced people. Unfortunately, we were not allowed to take pictures inside of the tomb. But I will carry the memory of that moment forever.
